Practical tips
Transport
Get an IC card (Suica/PASMO/ICOCA) on arrival for local transit. The Shinkansen between Tokyo and Kyoto is not covered by a short JR Pass — check whether a JR Pass saves money for your specific routes before buying.
Luggage forwarding
Use takkyubin (luggage forwarding) to send large bags from Tokyo to your Kyoto or Osaka hotel. This makes Shinkansen travel much more comfortable.
Cash
Carry yen. Many small shops and restaurants are still cash-only. ATMs at 7-Eleven and FamilyMart reliably accept foreign cards.
